Technology Diffusion
We recognize the importance of aligning our technology and business strategies to maximize on our key performance outcomes.
Historically our use of technology has been somewhat limited. Over the last Financial Year the company has aggressively implemented the Strategic Information System Plans targeting enhancement in telecommunication infrastructure, deploying productive and business applications.
The diffusion of technology has enhanced staff productivity, increased branding and awareness of the company, enhanced engagement with our clients and provided management information to improve our decisions. FCJ successfully deployed the following technology
The History
Factories Corporation of Jamaica Limited was incorporated under the Companies Act of Jamaica in 1987. The company, which is fully owned by the Government of Jamaica was formed to implement the Government’s Emergency Factory Building Programme.
Under this programme approximately one million square feet of factory space was built.
In 1988 when the company began operation from the 6th floor of the Oceana Hotel in Downtown, there was a staff complement of 23, to include two managers, 2 supervisors, a secretary, an office attendant, a maintenance officer and 16 security officers. Most of the staff complement were deployed to the Garmex Freezone where approximately 75% of FCJ’s tenants were engaged in the Garment Industry.
With the 1989 phasing out of the Jamaica Industrial Development Corporation, JIDC, a company which as part of its role was involved in the Government Construction Programme, FCJ’s role was expanded to include the management of the properties that were under the JIDC’s control.
Following the downturn in garment manufacturing towards the end of the 1990’s, a significant number of tenants began pursuing other manufacturing and commercial activities.
With the prospects that the Information Communication Technology, ICT, Industry held, the organisation embarked on an expansion of space to serve the growing area of information technology.
Who We Are
Factories Corporation of Jamaica Limited (FCJ) is one of the drivers of the Government of Jamaica’s economic growth and job creation agenda. We provide real estate solutions for a variety of industries such as manufacturing, agro-processing, warehousing and distribution and the Global Services Sector (Business Process Outsourcing).
FCJ is one of the largest providers of real estate in Jamaica with over one hundred facilities island-wide strategically situated, whether near the island’s ports or commercial districts.
We provide standalone buildings as well as spaces in industrial estates. Today FCJ manages over 1.6million square feet of industrial space for small, medium and large enterprises facilitating employment for approximately five thousand eight hundred and sixty-eight (5,868) individuals in a wide cross-section of industries.
FCJ stands firm by our mission to satisfy customer needs and enhance national development by providing quality industrial and commercial spaces at competitive rates.
With the prospects that the Global Services Sector (in particular Business Process Outsourcing) now holds, the organisation is embarking on another phase of expansion to cater to that industry. FCJ is now developing projects which will be suitable for Special Economic Zone (SEZ) status, thereby expanding value-added activities for transnational manufacturing and distribution companies.
Inside FCJ
The activities of the Company are overseen by a Board of Directors consisting of ten (10) individuals appointed by the responsible Minister, including a Managing Director who reports directly to the Board. The administrative structure comprises an Executive Office with eleven (11) departments, namely Finance, Property Development & Maintenance, Client Services, Estate, Human Resource & Administration, Information Technology, Marketing & Communications, Legal, Scrap Metal, Engineering and Procurement headed by managers, who report to the Managing Director. As of September 2024, the staff establishment was one hundred and twenty-three (123) permanent and temporary employees.
